I adore sewing with vintage patterns! Alas, the prices of these lovelies are going up and up. Here are some affordable vintage patterns from the 1940s currently for sale on etsy. (I'm not affiliated with any of these etsy sellers. I just thought the patterns were cute!)
Simplicity 4775 Size 14 What a darling jumper and blouse pattern! And they're quite fun for separates.
Laura Wheeler Mail Order #4832 Size 14 Isn't this just darling! I love the plaid and bow combination. Mail order patterns tend to go for less than Big 4 patterns and I'm not sure why because they are so cute.
Hollywood 1165 Size 16 Aren't these blouses fabulous! This one is missing the cuff piece, but that's easy to draft or you could use the sleeve from another 40s pattern.
Simplicity 2467 Waist 24 Evening dress patterns often go for loads but this skirt with cummerbund is a great evening option for a bargain. I'd love to whip up the one with the chevron.
Simplicity 1526 Bust 44 This classic dress pattern is oh so 40s! It'd be a great addition to any wardrobe.
McCall 5330 Size 14 I love all of the gathers! And the pockets! Swoon! If only it included the little blue tilt hat too!
So you hunt for the budget patterns on etsy? Or do you prefer to pay big bucks for those special patterns?

I've always scoured Ebay for good deals. If you just browse rather than search for something specific you can get some good deals because you get people selling who know nothing about patterns who don't know the key words to list with.
ReplyDeleteIf there's something specific I want I'll pay a lot for it, especially if I've seen it made up so I know that it is worth buying.
Those really are good finds! I prefer not to spend too much on patterns, but if it's something unique or something I really want, I'll spend a bit more but never big bucks. I do look often, so I tend to have an idea of things I think are relatively unique and maybe worth me spending more on. Fortunately I really don't do a lot (well really none so far, lol) of fancy sewing so that keeps the prices down for me.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog! I used to pass up vintage patterns all the time at estate sales, but I am determined to sew this year, so that is about to change. I'm just starting out... I mean a really real beginner. Can you recommend a basic sewing site or book?

The Colette Sewing Hand book is really nice for beginners and their blog is great too! www.colettepatterns.com Sewaholic is another great sewing blog/pattern line. http://sewaholic.net/ She's hosted some great sew alongs of her beginner patterns in the past and they are all nicely archived so you can go back and read through them and check out the photos too. Good luck!
DeleteI love that last one the best. :::sigh::: I think the 40s are positively the best decade of fashion.
ReplyDeleteI'm always looking on etsy for good buys. I hate to spend too much unless it's something I particularly want then I might spend a bit more.
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy how high some patterns are getting these days! A friend recently mentioned in a blog post about how she saw a Vogue pattern sell (not just be listed, but actually sell) for nearly $300, and I've seen fetch more than $150. It seems that likely nearly everything vintage, there's been a really sharp spike in the price of patterns over the past two-three years (and I doubt that's a trend we'll see halt anytime soon).
ReplyDeleteYou found some really lovely, pocketbook-friendly options - thank you for sharing!
