There can be a lot of challenges to building a great vintage wardrobe but there's one in particular that I want to talk about today and it comes from our modern upbringing. We think that we need a million pieces in our closet to have a complete wardrobe! Fast fashion says more more more but that's not how ladies of the past lived!
If you've ever see the closets in a vintage home, you've noticed how tiny they are compared to modern walk in closets. People didn't feel the need to have so much stuff (and couldn't afford to buy it all) especially during WWII. So today I'm going to show you two 1940s capsule wardrobes one for spring and summer and the other for fall and winter. This mode of thinking is so different from how most of us today approach our wardrobes but I hope to be able to show you that you don't need a closet bursting with vintage and reproduction dresses to have great vintage style.
After I filmed the video, I decided to take some photos and elaborate a bit more.
The Core Wardrobe
The core pieces of each wardrobe are above. You'll want a suit and coordinating cardigan. Pick a long sleeved cardigan for a suit with a short sleeved jacket or a short sleeved cardigan with a long sleeved jacket. Throw in a few coordinating blouses and a hat.
The suit can be worn by itself or with either of the two blouses. You can also wear the skirt with each of the blouses with no jacket for a more casual look. The hat can be worn with any of these outfits. I picked sort of a bold color palette with the red suit but more traditional colors like navy, black or gray would be even more versatile.
Pieces: 5
Outfits: 5
The Spring/Summer Wardrobe
For spring and summer, pick the short sleeved top for your suit. Add in a nice springy dress or two. I didn't have another coordinating summer weight skirt but that would also be nice.
Accessories are how we are going to really change up the core pieces. Add a springy hat that can be worn with any of the outfits you can build. I picked two pair of gloves-one white and one lavender- and a floral brooch with lavender flowers. Add in one neutral bag and matching shoes and you are good to go.
The dress can be worn by itself or with the suit jacket. Changing accessories like hats and gloves adds even more mixing possibilities. For example, with the white blouse and red skirt we could do a) green hat and white gloves, b) straw hat, lavender gloves and brooch c) straw hat and white gloves d) green hat, lavender gloves and brooch e) green hat and lavender gloves f) straw hat and lavender gloves g) green hat, white gloves and brooch and h) straw hat, white gloves and brooch. Each of these outfits could also be worn with the jacket or blue blouse. It goes on and on.
New Pieces: 6
New Outfits: 48 (more if you add the springy skirt)
The Fall/Winter Wardrobe
We've swapped out the spring dress for a more wintery one and added a winter weight skirt. Swap out the long sleeved top for your suit to be more winter appropriate. Another great piece you could add is a sweater that could be worn alone or over either of the blouses.
The winter accessories include a black beret, black gloves, sparkly brooch and black bag. You'll also want a black winter coat and pair of black shoes.
Ok, even more outfits now. Accessory combinations include a) beret, black gloves and brooch b) beret and black gloves, c) beret, white gloves and brooch d) beret and white gloves e) green hat, white gloves and brooch f) green hat, black gloves and brooch g) green hat and white gloves and h) green hat and black gloves. Two blouses and two skirts plus the option of suit jacket or no jacket gives us 8 bases. With the 8 accessory combinations we're up to 64 outfits! Add in another 16 from dress combinations (8 different sets of accessories with and without the jacket) and now we are at 80! Just adding that extra skirt gave us a huge number of extra outfits.
New Pieces: 7
New Outfits: 80
So let's see where we are at:
Total pieces: 21 (includes winter coat and 2 pairs of shoes not pictured)
Outfits: 130+
Wow! You'd only have to wear each outfit 3 times to make it through the whole year. I didn't even include outfit options with no hats! Adding another dress, more accessories or another skirt or blouse would give you even more options. So you see, you really don't have to have a huge wardrobe to have lots of outfit options.

Errands and Hair Modeling
Dresses and crinolines are all very fun to wear but sometimes life calls for something a bit more practical. I love a good pair of pedal pushers for running around town. Which is why I opted for something casual for a day of errands.
I wore my Freddies with this fun BBQ print top. It's such a fun print! I'm not normally a huge novelty print person but this one is just too perfect.
I love a good mid-century print. There's something about the atomic 50s style designs that I love. Perhaps it's because they don't read juniors or little girl like some other novelty prints can. Cutesy prints just don't work on me.
I'm pretty sure there's my dream kitchen out there somewhere covered in this print!
Sometimes when you take outfit photos, you have an audience. There are a lot of people who enjoy walking their dogs in my neighborhood. On this day, several of them where hanging out letting their puppies have some social time.
So, I'm trying to look cool and fabulous taking photos in the median in the street and then this happens:
Ok, so maybe I don't have a career ahead of me as a hair model but the dog walking ladies thought I was a hoot.
My best tip for taking photos in public is to have fun with it. It can feel weird if there are other people around but if you have fun, they'll have fun too. It's is odd to be a blogger and to document so much of your life like this.
What's the silliest thing you've ever done in a photoshoot in a public place?

10 Things I Love About Me
I turned 26 on Thursday and it was a bit weird looking ahead to being 26. For some silly reason, hitting the "upper twenties" was a bit scary for me. And then it came and went, and nothing bad happened. Ah, the crazy things we do to ourselves!
Instead, I had a great day shopping and relaxing and eating cake by the beach. I always figured that one birthday I'd magically wake up and feel like a well adjusted, responsible adult. That birthday hasn't arrived yet. Instead, I've found that every year I feel more comfortable with myself and less like I have to fit into some sort of box. And that's awesome!
So here are 10 things I love about myself right now at 26.
1. My Nose
I've not always liked my nose but now I think it's kind of cute! And I've also realized that it is part of what makes me look young which will be more and more useful as the birthdays roll around.
2. That I've realized that life isn't a competition
Ok, so some things are a competition but most things in life aren't competitions. We can all be winners! We can all have fun blogs and look cute and have something to say. My success doesn't mean that you can't have the same success. Life is so much happier when we can celebrate each other's successes rather than comparing how far we've each gotten.
3. My Waist
My waist is probably my favorite feature. It's not tiny compared to some people by it's tiny compared to the rest of me. I love accenting my waist. It makes me feel amazing.
4. My Curves
The other side of having a great waist is having great curves. Even though they can make buying ready to wear more difficult, they also make me feel fabulous. No one's body is perfect but knowing how to dress yourself makes it so much easier to love your body.
5. That I'm not afraid of color
There are so many "rules" out there about which colors to wear or not wear based on any number of things-your coloring, the season, your age, what's popular right now. I love the fact that I'm not afraid to embrace color. Color is so much fun!
6. My sewing skills
I love how much my sewing skills have grown. I'm mostly self taught and it's really cool to look at all of the things I know how to do. I'm quite proud of some of the garments I've made especially those from 2014. I've always loved to learn and I'm so glad that not being in school has not kept me from continuing to learn.
7. My complexion
This is another area that's not perfect but any means but I've really come to appreciate my skin. It's easy to compare yourself to fabulous ladies wearing gobs of makeup. Just watch a few taking off makeup videos on youtube and you'll realize that no one has perfect skin. Mine is actually quite nice.
8. My Eyes
Growing up, I always thought brown eyes were the most boring color. But now I really love my eyes. They are very pretty and go so well with my dark hair and fair skin.
9. That I'm not afraid to try new things.
Even crazy decades which shouldn't work for me like the 1920s. I think people miss a lot because they are too scared just to even try. I love that I've gotten braver about trying new things as I've gotten older.
10. That I'm me!
I am kind of crazy and weird and odd. I've yet to meet anybody quite like me. And I'm ok with that. I love fantasy novels and tragic musicals and taking walks and wearing different clothes. My favorite tv show is The Office and my favorite food is pickles. I loath competitive team sports and I don't care for ice cream. I'm a fashion blogger who wears almost exactly the same makeup everyday and only wear the same 3 or 4 pieces of jewelry 95% of the time. I can be very witty when I feel like it and wine makes me hiccup. I love doing crazy dance moves in the car. And I can never make up my mind about which decade I love to wear most.
So that's what I love about myself! I encourage you to list 10 things you love about yourself. Either share on your own blog or leave your list in the comments. Because, guess what? You are awesome too!

Red and Yellow
I adore wearing bold colors! Some ladies look great in pastels or dark neutrals but not me. Regular old grade school colors are my friends-red, yellow, orange, blue and green.
Yellow and red are a particularly festive combination and both feature heavily in my wardrobe.
I actually started out the day in the full patio set that I made a few years ago. Patio dresses are so fun to wear and while it was a bit of a pain to make, I'm so glad that I did.
But the weather turned out so glorious we decided that we simply had to go to the beach. For those of you who don't live near a beach, it's always windier on the coast than further inland. Poofy skirt + windy beach = Marilyn moment.
So I threw on this much less voluminous skirt instead. It was perfect for sitting on the beach. I'm not much of a swimmer. It has to be quite hot for me to want to swim but I love sitting and sun bathing.
And sunny yellow is a great color for sunny outdoor activities. And I find it quite difficult to be sad when I'm wearing such a bright color.
And I've been loving red accessories as well. I went off of red lipstick for a while but I recently started wearing it again. It is a bit more up keep during the day but it's very fun to wear. And, of course, a hair flower to spice up a not quite perfect hair do.
I'm still getting used to my hair in the Florida weather. Every day is no bit deal but I haven't quite got the hang of those fancy vintage styles I used to wear all the time.
But I will not let circumstances get me down. It took a long time to get my Ohio vintage wardrobe and hair down and that's what it will take to get my Florida wardrobe and hair picture perfect again.
What kinds of colors do you enjoy wearing?

Summer Sewing Plans
I'm already thinking of summer sewing! While I've been on a 40s kick pretty much all of 2015 so far, the warmer weather has brought out my 50s side! Or maybe it's just the bob hair cut. Either way, I'm planning some cute midcentury additions to my wardrobe this summer.
I'm in desperate need of some new shorts! I have one pair of rtw shorts but the two pair of me made shorts need to be replaced. One pair is too big and the other is getting kind of sad looking. So I'll be making a new pair of high waisted sorts from this Wearing History pattern.
My wardrobe is in desperate need of a basic black blouse so I'm going to make one from this pattern. I also need to replace my basic white blouse. The one I have wrinkles if you even look at it so I hardly ever wear it.
I also want to make at least one dress. I've got my eye on this pattern from the stash. I just adore the pockets and it looks easy and comfortable for summer. Also, love their hair!
I've also had to retire one of my circle skirts so I think I may replace it as well. I adore a great basic.

Sewing here and there
I've been doing some small sewing things lately. Nothing exciting enough for it's own post, but here they are.
I made a garment bag. I have realized that I need to take better care of my costumes since I'm starting to have some really nice ones. So I had some muslin and cotton fabric and I whipped one up.
I also traced out a pattern for a new style of coif from the Tudor Tailor. I still need to make a muslin of it to make sure it fits and then I'll be ready for HSM May.
I've also been tackling a few things from the mending pile. I've lost some weight since moving to Florida so a lot of the waist bands on my skirts need to be taken in. I hate wearing clothes that are too big!
And I've been thinking about summer sewing. I got these two lovely linen and cotton blend fabrics. The green is destined to be a pair of high waisted sorts and the black is for a blouse.
