One of the reasons I love this style so much is that my Grama styled her hair the same way in the 50s. Only without bangs. My mom says she can remember helping her pincurl her hair. :-)
You should try sally beauty or ebay for a great curling iron. We have three different sizes of irons that are salon types and we didn't pay the salon price.

Yeah, mine is a cheapo one from Walmart. It just doesn't grip very well so it's hard to use on short hair.
