Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

Oscar Wilde once said "Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." All too often, we face the pressure to conform whether from others or ourselves. But it is really important that we feel free to be true to who we are as a person.

And this is one of the reasons that I cut off my hair. In my heart, I am a short haired girl. And I love it. I've chopped it off and grown it out before and I'll probably do it again.

There are also some changes going on in my personal life especially with graduating and starting a new job and some that I want to make like being more athletic that short hair will be helpful with.

Also, I've been wanting to go back to my natural hair color. I've tried a few times but gave up after a few months. So, this way, most of the color is gone and it'll be easy to grow out the rest.

So I'll be rocking vintage and a pixie for a while.

This dress is Simplicity 3010. I made it at the end of 2013 but this is the first time it made it onto the blog.

It's made from a teal corduroy and has 13 buttons, 3 of which are functional. Originally, I had planned on doing bound button holes but I didn't feel like it when I actually got to sewing up the project.

I've been having some mixed feelings about this hair cut since I've gotten it but today has been a good day. I've decided that iPhone photos make my hair look worse (even with my longer hair) so I refuse to judge my hair by iPhone photos anymore. They just make me feel bad.

So today, I'm embracing my inner pixie. :D

  1. Love you new hair! You really have a good face for a pixie.

  2. I love short hair on you! It just seems to go with your features so well, and I'm right there with you about just being who you are, regardless of what others think. I'm currently letting my hair grow back out from a middy because I just don't feel like me without longer hair, even though I liked a lot of things about my middy. Also, totally agree with iphone photos. My selfies always look horrible.

  6. I know what you mean. I've chopped my bangs in hopes of embracing a more authentic 50s/rockabilly look. Then the many hairscapades that makes me just want to embrace more of me. I think I've been trying too hard to change me that I lost sight of what makes me most happy.

  7. I normally am not a fan of shorter hair, but you look absolutely lovely with it. Congratulations! I love your dress! (And your blog!) :-)

  8. I love corduroy. It's much too overlooked, in my opinion. And I love pixie hair, too. After my first child was born, I cut off enough hair to donate. Loved it! Grew it out for two years, had another baby, chopped it again. Some days it feels boring after you've done so many months of setting and curling, but in the end you'll like it. And hats start to play a bigger role, too, because you're not worried about smooshing curls! Great look!

  10. A) love the dress -- it looks so comfy and cozy, and the bright color ALMOST makes up for spring not being here yet! I keep pulling out bright colors too, trying to get myself thinking about warmth.

    B) that is the cutest hair cut you've had yet -- it just suits your face so much more. I hope you're loving it!

  11. Stephanie, you look adorably cute with your new haircut! Good decision, it makes you look younger (although I liked your endless versions of retro hairdos). :o)
Congratulation for graduating and good luck for the new job! I hope you'll still have enough time for sewing and blogging. Fingers crossed! ;o)

  13. I've always really loved pixie hair and often wished it was a style I could carry off myself. You look lovely with it, it really suits your bone structure.

I think amongst the vintage community there's a degree of pressure to achieve a certain look of authenticity which is ridiculous really, we should just do what makes us happy. There's no reason why pixie hair and vintage style can't go together (or anything else for that matter).

  20. Wise outlook on life, my dear. It's true, even in the fashion world where there is such vast room for individuality, it can sometimes seem like such is lacking or that it's a constant context to look and dress better than one another. I love and respect that you went with your gut when it came to your hair and that you're rocking a short length again. It truly looks gorgeous on you!

  25. I think your new hair cut is great!
And I already liked your dress on We Sew Retro, and even more now. The colour is very flattering on you and the shape works really well. I've seen some 1940's styles which can get a bit frumpy, but this one is just lovely.
