Saturday Morning Adventures

My Saturday morning started off by seeing a post about an estate sale on Facebook. Despite the fact that it had already been open for several hours by the time I got there, it was quite nice. I wasn't sure what to expect since it was my first estate sale but I really had a really nice time talking talking to some of the daughters of the lady whose home the sale was at.

My big score was some darling vintage gloves.

A darling light brown with cut out details at the wrist.

This black pair has the most adorable scalloped and embroidered details at the wrist.

And a pair of long dark brown gloves.

I had a lovely time chatting with the ladies. They even showed me their mom's gorgeous wedding dress and the most amazing velvet bathing suit! This is why I love vintage! It helps keep a connection with the past alive.

Post estate sale, we stopped by Fazoli's. Nom nom nom. It just happens to be located right next to a thrift store so we popped in. I found this lovely vintage pale pink blouse. I think it's late 50s/early 60s but it's just too cute! I also found a green belt, which I've been looking for for a while.

Thrifting Fun

Thrifting is a rare occurrence for me because I don't have a regular thrifting buddy. And when I take my poor husband, he's ready to leave after 5 minutes, but today we worked something out. I thrifted and he went to a near by bar or some place to watch sports. As I hate watching sports, this was fine by me.

First, I stopped by a thrift store I'd never been to before. Several people had told me that I had to go see all of the vintage stuff they had. So I was pretty excited. They did have some clothes, hats and furniture but I was a bit under whelmed. The bad thing about going to a thrift store that knows they have vintage is that they price like they know they have vintage. I was hoping to at least take home a hat but it was not to be. Most were damaged. :(

I did find some goodies in the craft area. I snagged two pairs of knitting needles, a vintage belt kit and a pack of lingerie guards.

I also found this lovely hiding among the 80s knitting magazines. I wasn't entirely sure what it was in the store but I thought these two ladies were cute enough to warrant $0.80

It appears to be an interfacing kit for making a tailored jacket. Here's what was inside:

Two pieces of canvas with some felt attached and also a piece for the collar.

The felt is attached with these zig zag stitches that look similar to things I've seen on other people's hand made jackets. It's a size 14 which is a bit smaller that I wear so we'll see what happens with it. Have you ever seen anything like this?

I also went to another thrift store (after some yummy Mexican for lunch) but no luck there. I wasn't really expecting much since there is a local vintage store right down the street from it. And since I was right there, I couldn't not pop in the vintage store for a visit. I was looking for separates today but I got distracted by hats.

I got this lovely 40s hat. Just love it! It's actually a bit more maroon than the photo shows.

I was very happy to find a 40s hat to add to my collection. One day I want to have as many hats as Solanah but I have a long way to go!

I also couldn't resist this little navy and white 50s hat. I have some graduation parties to attend tonight and I think I just have to wear this hat out!

I know I have some local(ish) readers and really you should check this place out. It's called Feather's Vintage Clothing. It's smaller that the other local vintage store that closed this past summer but they have very reasonable prices. I thought the prices were very fair and I loved that everywhere I looked, there were more hats! I'll definitely be stopping back!

Antiquing Haul

 Saturday, my friend Laura and I went to an antique mall on Saturday and it was so much fun! There was tons and tons of stuff. It was quite overwhelming!

Laura had told me that the last time she went that there were lots of lovely hats so I was definitely on the look out for some.

Although my husband's comment as I was pulling them out of the bag was "How many did you get?!?", I really did restrain myself quite a bit and only brought home four.

The hat splurge of the day was this lovely straw sun hat with a velvet ribbon and bows at the front and back for $25. Not the steal of the day but much less than usually spend on hats on etsy so I was happy.

A lovely green and gold cocktail hat for $7. I suspect it may have had a few more feathers earlier in its life but it still looks nice.

This little white hat has pale pink flowers and a navy blue ribbon and was mine for $4.50. Spring , come soon!

I almost left this little feathered cocktail hat behind but when back and grabbed it at the last minute. At only $5, I couldn't resist.

Patterns were pretty scarce but reasonably priced. I snagged the only 3 non-childrens non-pj patterns that weren't 60s-now.

And more skirts! See the damage to the front of the cover? One of the workers taped my table tag to the front of it and my poor pattern was ripped when it came off. :( I haven't check any of these for completeness but at $1.50 each I figured it was worth the risk.

My find of the day was this lovely table on sale for $99. I don't know much about how vintage furniture should be priced but it seemed pretty fair to me. It wasn't in mint condition but it cleaned up really nice. It also has a leaf that can go in the middle. We've been considering getting a new kitchen table so this find was serendipitous. Just as soon as we get a new home for our old table this one will be quite happy in our kitchen. It didn't come with chairs so we have to find some. Any thoughts as to what would look good?

The antique mall was convinently located near a huge grocery store called Jungle Jims. They have EVERYTHING!!!! including my husband's favorite beer. So I picked him up a six pack of Hofbrau Dunkel and also grabbed some Sam Adams Winter Lauger (another but easier to find favorite) which was on sale cheap. He was pretty happy.

Saturdays

Today was one of those days that starts off terrible. We had to go the the BMV today since I don't have a driver's license (or permit for that matter) and my military id expires next week. We scouted out a branch that was open on Saturdays and woke up early to be there right when it opened at 8 am so we could be in and out. Well, it was in and out, but that's because every BMV in the county decided to randomly be closed this Saturday for no apparent reason....

While driving home, we drove by our local market and decided to stop in. And that's pretty much where the terrible part stopped. :) I didn't have my camera but I snapped some shots with my iPhone.

I picked up a poinsettia plant and one of these cute pine bouquets.

Simple effective advertising.

I so wish I hadn't had breakfast before we came because this place makes crepes! Nom nom nom.

We made a repeat purchase at this cheese stand. One flavor we picked up was pumpkin. Nom nom nom again.

And they were all festive too!

I adored the tags on these aprons!

We also wandered around downtown and I couldn't resist taking a picture of this sign! Sounds like my kind of place!

I was all cute for getting my id picture taken. Yay for new teal tights!

The poinsettias and pine bouquet got me all in a decorating mood so decorating ensued when we got home.

And we got a tree today. Now the entire apartment smells like pine!

We also stopped by a Goodwill where I found this jacket.

I'm not sure if it's an old jacket or just has an old style tag. It does have care instructions so that places it at the earliest from the 60s. There were 5 or 6 jackets from this same company but the hubby reminded me that I didn't need 5 or 6 trenches.....

The faux fur lining zips off so it can be a trench too!

The lining under the trench is a great plaid!

I also picked up a roomy grey wool jacket. It's times like this that I love that my mother-in-law works at a dry cleaner so I can get stuff dry cleaned without worrying that it will be ruined.

I also found a great pencil skirt and it's old.

The tag says union made garment so I'm thinking 40s. It's a tad tight but loosing 5 lbs (or buying some spanxs) should fix that problem.

I love a good antique store!

There is an antique store in a small town out near my church and I've been wanting to go for a while, but it's always closed on Sunday when I'm up at church. Today, my husband and I were out there getting some work done and I snatched the opportunity to hit the antique store after we were finished. They had tons of cute tea cups. I'd love to start collecting vintage tea cups but, alas, there is no place to store them in my tiny apartment.

So here is what I did take home with me!

A little over 2 yds of this lovely landscape print on a knit. I think it may be Venice because of the gondolas but it's cute none the less.

I also found this piece of the same type of material but with a Chinese print. It's a bit larger than the other piece. And they were only $4 each!

I also found this lovely vintage beaded collar! The tag says it was handmade in Japan. It was missing the hook part of the hook and eye and the pearly coating has come off of most of the outer row of beads, but adding a hook was easy and it still looks lovely. Someone loved this very much. And now I do! I thought it was worth the $5. It will be making its debut tomorrow along with my new hat! Can't wait to share that with you!

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a penny in your shoe

There's nothing wedding about this post, but the cliched rhyme just seemed like a good way to organize my post.

Something Old

I got to do a bit of thrifting yesterday! Woot! I did find some vintage and even some pieces that I could take home.

My catch!

I picked up two vintage scarves (top right and left), a wide neck striped shirt (bottom left) and a darling floral purse (bottom right). I don't have a date for any of these items, but I'm thinking 60s on the scarves due to the washing instructions on the tags. The shirt didn't have any washing instructions and it's also obviously made to be worn with high waisted pants or skirts due to the length. I'm think it is a bit old. The purse has no tags what so ever. I just thought it was cute. I also picked up some old sheet sets to scavenge the fabrics.

Something New

I also went out to a Jo-Anne's Superstore where they were having a fabulous sale plus I had a 25% off coupon! To my surprise, Butterick patterns were on sale for $1.99 too so I picked up a whole bunch of their repro patterns.

Most of the patterns were 50s dresses.

I love all of the full skirts. The only bummer is they take about 5 yds.

And I picked up one 60s pattern. I love the neckline!

Something Borrowed

The low point of the day was having my debit card lost/stolen. Not sure exactly what happened to it. I used it to pay for dinner and I'm pretty sure I didn't get it back from the cashier, but it was no where in the restaurant. :( So, I had to cancel it. Thankfully, there were no extra charges on it!

Something Blue

Summer sewing is going to be all about nautical-red, white, blue! There will be no problems dressing for Independence Day this year!

I picked up this lovely floral for one of the full 50s dresses. Not sure which one yet.

I also picked up this blue plaid for this pattern. I'm going to copy the dress on the cover. Is that cheating?

I also grabbed this peacock feather fabric to make this lovely evening ensemble. It doesn't exactly fit into my spring or summer sewing palettes but it was too fabulous to pass up.

And a penny in your shoe

I take surveys online to earn Amazon.com gift cards and I recently racked up enough points to get these 3 fashion books for $0.32!

These books are full of gorgeous, drool worthy fashions. There were also some surprises such as hoodies, plus sizes, and pointy shoes! I really want to get the rest of the series.
