I went looking on youtube for tutorials on how to style a 1920s bob and I couldn't find any! I don't know if they were hidden beneath all of the faux bob tutorials or if it's just too simple for anyone else to make a video for but I decided to make one. Here it is!

How to Tie a 1940s Turban
This week's tutorial will show you how to tie a 1940s turban. They are a great style for those hot humid summer days. In this video, I also share a great tip to keep slippery scarves from sliding off of your head.

Trying new things
You all know that I have been growing my pixie out for about 9 months or so. And this week, I was finally ready to go to the salon and have a professional do something to it. It was getting rather crazy with all of the unequally growing out bits so out came the scissors!
Snip! Snip! If you follow on Instagram, you've already seen this but I got a lot of length chopped off of the back.
I have always, always wanted a 1920s flapper bob and now I have one! I almost cut my hair into on the last time I grew out a pixie but I chickened out. I'm so glad I went for it this time because I love it.
As for the outfit, I don't exactly have a lot of 20s appropriate pieces in my wardrobe so I just threw this together from what I had. The sweater is one from Ann Taylor that I hardly ever wear because white sweaters and crazy birds flying around tend not to end well. But it's long enough to look 20s when not tucked in. And the skirt is one I made from a 50s pattern but it's pretty basic. And for the extra pow factor- American Duchess 23 Skidoos.
I was actually quite happy with how this look turned out. I have avoided the 20s so far because it's ideal body shape is about as opposite from mine as you can get. And while I will say other decades are more flattering, I didn't feel fat in this outfit at all. I rather feel like a 20s lady golfer, actually! Just need some clubs.
I'm still getting used to the shorter length, but I love it! I had a bob all through out high school and I've always kind of wanted to go back to that. But that super critical *youmustbeaperfectvintagefashionblogger* voice would always whine "But then you can't do pin curls!" and so I resisted.
But now I get to shut that voice up and say I can rock it! This do looks surprisingly good with modern clothes and I'm sure will be just darling with 40s and 50s styles too.
I don't have any current plans to actively add 20s pieces to my wardrobe but who knows. I'm trying not to be so plan oriented with fashion and just let it be fun for a while. And this is the second fun new look I've tried this year along with the 40s suit.
Right now, I'm having fun with the new do and enjoying the short hair lifestyle again! Plus I can't wait to play around with some 20s make up for day and evening.
Have you ever tried a fun and crazy hair do before? Is there one you've been dying to try but haven't had the courage to?

A Very Easy 1950s Style for Bobbed Hair
Sorry for the radio silence this week! I came down with a cold Sunday evening and I didn't have energy for both packing and blogging. Thankfully, I filmed and edited an extra youtube video last week for an easy 1950s hair style for ladies with bobbed hair. The big move date is Friday and then Christmas and New Years will be here before we know it so it may be quite on the blog for a while. Don't worry! I'll be back strong in 2015 with more vintage goodness! (and also, Florida!)

Changing things up
Sometimes you just need to shake things up. After being very anti war era 40s for so long, I'm diving right in to those great 40s fashions!
It's been really fun to dig into my closet and wear things that I haven't worn in a while like this great chartreuse dress.
I made this back in Summer 2012 from Butterick 5281 which is a reprint of a 1946 pattern.
Speaking of changes, I dyed my hair! If you follow me on Instagram, you already saw a photo of the dye I used. It definitely didn't come out the color on the box but I really like it!
To tone down the chartreuse, I accessorized with brown. Plus I have a great brown and chartreuse hat!
What things have you been changing up in you look lately?

The bodice came out a bit odd and it was almost on the chopping block in last October. Now I'm really glad that I kept it.
I actually really adore chartreuse! Plus this dress is so comfortable!

Hair, Hair, Hair
Oh, me and my hair! I love it then I hate it. I make snap decisions to change it. I worry about it for weeks without making a decision! I want it short. I want it long.
*Sigh*
Well, at the moment, I want it long again so it's time for a grow out. I'm going to try and do a better job of documenting the grow out process this go around. (If you are new to the blog, I had a pixie cut fall/winter 2012 and then grew it out winter/spring 2013.) So I'll be doing regular youtube videos on my progress the first of which will be at the end of this post.
I didn't get a chance to talk much about why I got the pixie, what I liked/disliked about having it and why I decided to grow it out. That would have been waaaaaaay to long of a video! So that's what this post is devoted to.
Part 1: Getting the Chop
This past winter was horrid! We didn't really warm up for good until May. I usually get a bit of seasonal depression in the winter and bad winter = bad seasonal depression. My hair was being rather uncooperative. And I needed a change.
Also, I was already thinking about the trip to Florida and the vow renewals. Last time I visited Florida on vacation, it was serious pin curl fail every day. So pixie cut it was!
Part 2: Living with the Chop
Having a pixie cut was awesome! It was so easy to style. A pixie may take more work to style than a modern long style which you can always throw into a pony tail but it's much less work than pin curling. Especially since I didn't have to do anything at night.
It was pretty much a weather proof style as well. I no longer feared rain, wind or humidity-all enemies of the pin curl set. Ah, it was glorious.
But something started to happen. My casual go with anything pixie started causing me to dress more and more casually on a day to day basis. Before I knew it, I was living in shorts and t-shirts when not at work or planning on an outfit post.
Even when I dressed vintage, I didn't feel the way I did when I had longer hair.
Part 3: Deciding Against the Chop
So that's when I decided to grow out my pixie. During my last pixie, I planned out the grow out so that it would be during the winter when I could wear loads of hats. Alas, I'll be doing the worst part of this grow out during the hottest moths of the year.
Part 4: The Grow Out Plan
So here's my grow out plan!

Denman Styling Brush
When I started out pin curling, I just used any old brush I had lying around. But I've spied Denman brushes on several other youtube channels and I decided to see what all the hype is all about.

Hair Experiments
Sometimes, it's fun to experiment with new things.
Like today, I tried a new setting pattern for a 50s swept back hair do.
It certainly wasn't a perfect first try but you have to start somewhere.
I'm convinced that with more practice, I can do better.
Although I do quite like the way this side view looks. It was fun trying out something new.
I paired my new do with a new 3/4 circle skirt and black turtle neck. I was going for a bit of late 50s early 60s glamor.
To add to the glam factor, I accessorized with my great-grandmother's vintage brooch and some sparkly lucite earrings.
What new hair style have you been dying to try?

Youtube: Victory Rolls for Short Hair
Victory rolls are an iconic 40s hairstyle but they can be quite difficult to wrangle. Add in short hair and they can be downright frustrating. Here's my technique for quick victory rolls on short hair. The secret's in the setting pattern!

Do you have a favorite setting pattern or do you like to change it up all the time?
