Refashion and a Re-do

Doing Project 333 has really changed the way I look at clothes. I really thought about some of the pieces that I liked in theory but I never quite got around to wearing. Most of them had fabrics I loved but either the fit was off or I had to wear a fancy bra which I'm not willing to do for more than a few hours.

So I picked four pieces to refashion as part of my fall Project 333. If I could make it work, then they'd become keepers. If not, I can say goodbye knowing that I tried. And here is the first one!

This is a fabric that I fell in love with at Jo-Ann's but I couldn't handle the price tag. But I was able to score it for half off in the red tag clearance section. It's first life was as a wearable muslin of Simplicity 8398 which I later used to make a bridesmaid's dress out of a yummy silk cotton.

The main problems with this dress were that it was a bit long waisted, that it was a bit too big (and I never got around to making the matching belt) and that I couldn't wear a normal bra with it. I decided to refashion it into a pleated skirt.

I'm much more comfortable with novelty prints only on the bottom half of me anyways. I styled it with a lace cami and white blouse for a very girly look.

Oh, yeah. I also got my hair cut off this weekend. I tried and tried and tried to grow out my hair and make it work with the Florida humidity but it was not to be. It was not going to happen.

Previously, my pixie cut decisions had been very emotional and impulsive. I wanted a change so I got one. This go around I was much more logical and thought out about it. A pixie is very easy and very me. I love the lifestyle that comes with a pixie. Riding with the windows down anyone.

Not to mention that I absolutely love it! I'm planning on keeping it much longer term than any of my previous pixies. Florida Stephanie has her Florida hair back. :D

And because I couldn't find a photo of the back of my head from my previous pixie, here's the back of my head. Now and forever I'll have a great reference for future pixies.

Overall, I feel like this look really captures what I want my wardrobe to feel like- vintage inspired, bold colors, fun and easy.

Now to just finish the rest of the refashions so I have options in my wardrobe again!

P.S. Check out my other piece of new nerd bling. It's a mobius strip with I love you. I know. stamped around it. Yay Star Wars!

Just Another Pixie Grow Out: Month 6

Another hair update! I've hit the six month mark! I'm not sure how many more of these I'm going to do since my hair is mostly grown out at this point, but that means that I can get back to doing hair tutorials post move.

Hair, Hair, Hair

Oh, me and my hair! I love it then I hate it. I make snap decisions to change it. I worry about it for weeks without making a decision! I want it short. I want it long.

*Sigh*

Well, at the moment, I want it long again so it's time for a grow out. I'm going to try and do a better job of documenting the grow out process this go around. (If you are new to the blog, I had a pixie cut fall/winter 2012 and then grew it out winter/spring 2013.) So I'll be doing regular youtube videos on my progress the first of which will be at the end of this post.

I didn't get a chance to talk much about why I got the pixie, what I liked/disliked about having it and why I decided to grow it out. That would have been waaaaaaay to long of a video! So that's what this post is devoted to.

Part 1: Getting the Chop

This past winter was horrid! We didn't really warm up for good until May. I usually get a bit of seasonal depression in the winter and bad winter = bad seasonal depression. My hair was being rather uncooperative. And I needed a change.

Also, I was already thinking about the trip to Florida and the vow renewals. Last time I visited Florida on vacation, it was serious pin curl fail every day. So pixie cut it was!

Part 2: Living with the Chop

Having a pixie cut was awesome! It was so easy to style. A pixie may take more work to style than a modern long style which you can always throw into a pony tail but it's much less work than pin curling. Especially since I didn't have to do anything at night.

It was pretty much a weather proof style as well. I no longer feared rain, wind or humidity-all enemies of the pin curl set. Ah, it was glorious.

But something started to happen. My casual go with anything pixie started causing me to dress more and more casually on a day to day basis. Before I knew it, I was living in shorts and t-shirts when not at work or planning on an outfit post.

Even when I dressed vintage, I didn't feel the way I did when I had longer hair.

Part 3: Deciding Against the Chop

So that's when I decided to grow out my pixie. During my last pixie, I planned out the grow out so that it would be during the winter when I could wear loads of hats. Alas, I'll be doing the worst part of this grow out during the hottest moths of the year.

Part 4: The Grow Out Plan

So here's my grow out plan!

Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.

Oscar Wilde once said "Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." All too often, we face the pressure to conform whether from others or ourselves. But it is really important that we feel free to be true to who we are as a person.

And this is one of the reasons that I cut off my hair. In my heart, I am a short haired girl. And I love it. I've chopped it off and grown it out before and I'll probably do it again.

There are also some changes going on in my personal life especially with graduating and starting a new job and some that I want to make like being more athletic that short hair will be helpful with.

Also, I've been wanting to go back to my natural hair color. I've tried a few times but gave up after a few months. So, this way, most of the color is gone and it'll be easy to grow out the rest.

So I'll be rocking vintage and a pixie for a while.

This dress is Simplicity 3010. I made it at the end of 2013 but this is the first time it made it onto the blog.

It's made from a teal corduroy and has 13 buttons, 3 of which are functional. Originally, I had planned on doing bound button holes but I didn't feel like it when I actually got to sewing up the project.

I've been having some mixed feelings about this hair cut since I've gotten it but today has been a good day. I've decided that iPhone photos make my hair look worse (even with my longer hair) so I refuse to judge my hair by iPhone photos anymore. They just make me feel bad.

So today, I'm embracing my inner pixie. :D

Pixie does 40s

The decade I've been most nervous about pulling off with my pixie is the 40s but I finally decided to take the plunge and see if I could rock it!

It was unseasonably warm so I pulled out this vintage 40s dress for one last hurrah before the cold set in.

While this sort of pixie definitely isn't period, I think it looks super cute!

My husband was taking Christmas photos for clients but I made him take some shots playing around on the set!

The good news is that this set up is at my church so I'll have a good backdrop for photos for the whole Christmas season!

I really love the cut of 40s dresses. The skirts are so swooshy without being bulky like 50s skirts can be.

I just love the darling print on this dress! It's almost as cute as my hair!

Is there a decade that you are afraid of wearing? Be bold and believe in yourself and you can do it!

The Runner Up Dress

You guys loved my date night outfit from last week but some of you were rooting for a different outfit. I too liked the runner up outfit so I chose to wear it another day.

It was a bit chilly so I paired my dress with tights and a cardigan.

I think this dress looked super cute with my pixie! (It helps that I'm far enough removed from sewing this dress up that I mostly forgot how annoying the fabric was to work with.)

Here's my new purse! I bought it from a darling etsy shop. For some reason, I just can't get into sewing purses for myself. When I spied this one in a cute teal fabric, I just had to have it!

I'm so loving the short hair!

Happy Friday!
