I've got plenty to be thankful for

So, the 30s sewing has been going slowly. And it's been in a not very winter appropriate direction. So for Thanksgiving this year, I scoured my closet for some 30s appropriate pieces to throw together an outfit for my new favorite decade.

Tada! A long green skirt adds to the 30s feel even though it's technically a 50s piece. And basic blouses and cardigans can really go with any decade.

I did a very basic fingerwave and pincurl set. It was the very first time I've ever done fingerwaves by hand and not by using a pincurl set. I was pretty happy with how it turned out even if it did take all day to dry.

Footwear is so key to a great outfit. It was so fun to finally get to wear these American Duchess 23Skidoos with a period appropriate outfit.

I don't have a ton of festive holiday jewelry but a pretty pearl and rhinestone wreath was just the ticket for a bit of sparkle! I particularly love this piece because it belonged to my great grandmother.

These photos were taken at my in-law's church where my husband's side of the family had their celebration. They had this darling tree set up so I couldn't resist posing with it! One of the downsides of moving right before Christmas is not getting to decorate this year.

Ah, well. I'll just have to enjoy everyone else's decorations this year!

Thanksgiving (Again)

If you've been around the blog a while, you know that I have a lot of Thanksgivings to go to every year. (Lately, it's been 4) So there's more Thanksgiving outfit goodness ahead.

I went for more of a Christmas-y look since I adore Christmas! (That's my hubby's cousin posing with me!)

This dress is from way back and it has some fit issues but that's easily fixed with a cardigan.

Do you love Christmas or Thanksgiving more?

Thanksgiving

Hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving! This year, my mother-in-law's Thanksgiving fell on the day of my Master's thesis defense so I was a bit less festive than usual but still looking sharp.

I was going for classy and intelligent since I had to go straight from my defense to dinner.

My defense went amazing so I was really able to relax and enjoy some family time which hasn't happened a lot this semester.

And of course, some kitty love always helps with stress levels.

Outfit:
Sweater: Banana Republic
Skirt: Me-made

This is also the hair style from last week's youtube. I actually filmed it the day of my defense and my hubby made fun of me all day. I retorted that I had to do my hair anyways. :p

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving all! Hope your holiday weekend was lovely! Here's what I wore to Thanksgiving #3 (of 4!). If you missed my outfit for #2, it's here.

I made this dress a while ago from some 1950s looking Christmas quilting fabric. I was hoping that using a contrasting fabric for the top would tone down the "Christmas-iness" but alas, it is not so. So now it's been relegated to my holiday wardrobe.

I broke with my tradition of wearing plaid but I did get to wear my crinoline which was super fun. Alas, the event was a bit cramped for space and I took up a lot. Whoops!

Fabric: Christmas quilting fabric and some random white fabric from the stash
Pattern: Butterick 8078
Year: 1950s
Notions: zipper ($2), buttons ($3)
First worn: November '12
Wear again? Yup, it's a bit Christmas-y for most of the year but it's great for Thanksgiving to New Years. I've already made up a second version of this pattern and it's lovely!

I felt that the top was a bit plain so I added green buttons and some red embroidery. I also used a vintage belt kit for the matching belt.

I accessorized with a red cardigan to amp up the Christmas vibe and my polka dot and red heals. I love tea length dresses with super high heels!

What did you wear to this weekend's holiday festivities?

Traditons

One reason we love the holidays is those little traditions that connect the memories over the years. Last year, I made a lovely plaid dress for Thanksgiving. It turned out excellent considering that I'd only been sewing for a couple months but it had some fitting issues. Plus I had this lovely plaid fabric hanging out in my stash so I decided to start my own little tradition of plaid Thanksgiving dresses.

This dress is from Simplicity 3673 which I made before but this is one of the other views. For some reason, the back of this dress is really huge! The first version I made gaped a little but this one is really ridiculous. Guess I'll be ripping out that lovely lapped zipper and putting it back in again. *sigh* I did have great success with the plaid matching on the seams! Woot!

I'm batting two for two here with sewing projects and my husband. He LOVED the black double agent dress and he thought I looked sexy in this one. Could have just been my crazy awesome approaching hooker height black stiletto oxfords scored for only $30 but I'm betting on the rad plaid matching sewing skills. ;)

Plaid is Rad

I love shopping and sewing! And I've been doing both lately! I picked up a cute pattern for a dress and the cover had one made out of plaid material. I instantly fell in love with the design made by the plaid on the piece and set out to make my own. I finished it yesterday and wore it out for Thanksgiving today!

Dress: Handmade by me
Sweater: New York and Company
Cami: Banana Republic
Shoes: White House Black Market
Tights: ??? probably Walmart

My hubby also took me out shopping last night as an early Christmas present! I got some super good deals.

I got this red sweater for $20 and a white one in the same style. You can't see, but it has super cute rhinestone buttons! And it's super soft and warm. I actually got hot wearing it and that never happens to me!

I also got these *fabulous* oxford style booties for $30 at White House Black Market! AHHHH! Originally $108!!! I've been thinking about getting a pair of oxford style heals so these were just perfect. They make me super tall and I can actually walk in them as long as I'm on a firm surface (ie not in the grass).

Here is my dress sans sweater. Isn't the way the plaid lies just divine? It's far from perfect but I was very happy with it.

I felt quite stylish today. Did you dress up for the holiday? Or do you prefer comfy, more practical clothes for turkey day?
