Diamonds are a girl's best friend

This week's Youtube of the week is from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes starring Marilyn Monroe. Three guesses as to what it is. (First two don't count!)

Plaid is Rad

I love shopping and sewing! And I've been doing both lately! I picked up a cute pattern for a dress and the cover had one made out of plaid material. I instantly fell in love with the design made by the plaid on the piece and set out to make my own. I finished it yesterday and wore it out for Thanksgiving today!

Dress: Handmade by me
Sweater: New York and Company
Cami: Banana Republic
Shoes: White House Black Market
Tights: ??? probably Walmart

My hubby also took me out shopping last night as an early Christmas present! I got some super good deals.

I got this red sweater for $20 and a white one in the same style. You can't see, but it has super cute rhinestone buttons! And it's super soft and warm. I actually got hot wearing it and that never happens to me!

I also got these *fabulous* oxford style booties for $30 at White House Black Market! AHHHH! Originally $108!!! I've been thinking about getting a pair of oxford style heals so these were just perfect. They make me super tall and I can actually walk in them as long as I'm on a firm surface (ie not in the grass).

Here is my dress sans sweater. Isn't the way the plaid lies just divine? It's far from perfect but I was very happy with it.

I felt quite stylish today. Did you dress up for the holiday? Or do you prefer comfy, more practical clothes for turkey day?

Jazz Age Fashion and a Movie

Today I indulged in some Disney and watched The Princess and the Frog (2009). Besides being a really cute movie, it has some great 20's fashion. Here's some inspiration for your viewing pleasure!

Aren't they all so cute! I adore 20's fashion, but unfortunately, I don't have the figure for it and I never will. I can, however, wear cute 20's hats. The hats in this film make me drool like no other.

I love Charlotte "Lottie" LaBouff. She has the most amazing wardrobe! (Even if it's all cartoon!) When I first saw this movie, I thought she was going to be evil (in my head pretty blonde girl = evil???). But she's not! I love her character!

There is also a fabulous dream sequence where Tiana describes her dream restaurant! How positively delicious!

Some polyvore inspirations too!

Pink Pink Pink!

Fitzgerald Fashionista

Today in my Ireland and America history class, we talked about the Kennedys, as in JF and Jackie. My professor teaches a lot with pictures, so I was hoping for some drool worthy shots of Jackie. I *adore* Jackie. No such luck, but we did talk a bit about JF's mom, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. I was quite struck by her sense of style.

She was lovely.

Here she is with her father, Honey Fitz, a noted politician. She's the woman with the great hat.

Here she is again with her dad. She's the woman on the right of center. Love her jacket!

The Kennedy family in England. Rose is in the center. They are all so stylish!

The whole pack. Rose is in the middle again. JF is the first guy on the left. Aren't the girls' suits just darling!

Catch up!

Sorry I've been so quiet lately! It's been pretty crazy around here. So, I've got a couple of little lovelies to show you.

My November BOM from Belle Blossoms came in last Monday! I didn't want to post about it right away as to not ruin the surprise for people who hadn't gotten theirs yet, but I figure most people have theirs by now. (I live only a couple states away from Heather so I get mine pretty quick.)

Isn't is so pretty? I received a bright red Chrysanthemum!

Here's the front view. I like how flat it sits on my head. It's bringing a much needed pop of color to my brown outfit today.

I'm actually wearing it back here today, but I just couldn't get a good picture of it back here. I did, however, manage to get several good shots of Mythbusters on tv!

Gertie's next sew along is coming up soon! My Colette pattern came in this Saturday, which got me all excited! I'm going to really want to start on it soon, but I do have another project to finish first. Gertie shared some fabric picks this week here. I've already picked out my fabric though.

We're making view 2 of the Crepe pattern for the sew along.

Here's all of my goodies!

This is the fabric I picked for my dress. (I'm making a Christmas dress, if you couldn't tell.) It's probably a bit heavier weight than is suggested, but I really wanted a Christmas dress and I really loved this fabric. So, I'll have to see how it turns out.

I picked out this fabulous red material for the tie!

I also won a $35 gift card to Bombshell Bettie's Vintage from Huzzah Vintage. I've already spent it and my stuff may be here today! :D

Blog Award!

Miss 1941 has awarded me the One Lovely Blog Award! Oh, yay! I love when people like my blog! So do go check out her blog. You can peruse the other blogs who received the award as well.

I'm supposed to pass the award on to 15 other bloggers, but as I've already passed it along to several in October, I'll just add these three great bloggers that I've found since then. So in no particular order:

1) Yesterday Girl

2) Lemondrop Vintage

3) In the Heyday

On a side note, when I googled "star spangled heart" today to find the picture of the poster I used in my last post, several pictures of me on ones from my blog where right up there near the top! Woot! Google knows I exist!

For our Boys

Today is a day set aside to remember those who have put their lives on the line for our country. Growing up, I never was particularly patriotic. My maternal grandfather served in the Navy and my paternal grandfather served in the Air Force, but the military was never a big part of my life.

You're probably wondering about now about the definite patriotic feel of my blog. Just over three years ago, I met my husband. He was in the Army Reserves, but it was never more that a once monthly annoyance. Then, one month after he proposed, they dropped a bombshell-he was being shipped out to Iraq. This wasn't supposed to happen. I was supposed to be planning my wedding with my finace, not wondering if I was ever going to see him again.

It was a long, miserable year, but we got married when he came home on leave and when he was home for good, we got started on that whole newly wed thing.

Life's gotten back to normal again and the Army is back to taking only its normal one weekend a month. While I'm still not the most patriotic person out there, I get it a little better. I understand what our soldiers give up when they sign on that dotted line. And with laptops and cell phones, I know I had it much easier than most of our vets and their families.

So regardless of whether you feel like the military has made any impact on your life, take the time to thank a veteran and their families today. I know I'm saying thanks to my hero today!

Fashion and Film: Hairspray

I love musicals! Hairspray is a great one with fab vintage fashions. Normally, I'm not much of a fan of 60s styles, but the early 60s looks in this film are great!

Hairspray is the story of Tracy Turnblad, a teenage Baltimore gal living in 1962. She's a big girl with big dreams-catching the eye of local hottie Link and making it on to the Corny Collins Show with the most popular kids in town. Tracy runs into all sorts of social prejudices against people who are different and takes on a new dream-making a difference. Will she succeed in any of her dreams with so many people against her?

I like this film a lot. The music is great. There are a lot of big name actors and actresses in this film, including John Travolta as Tracy's mom Edna. Christopher Walkin plays her dad and the two are great opposite each other. I could go on and on about this film, but here's some fashion for you.

The cast of the Corny Collins show. I love all of the dress the girls wear! I just adore how sharp all the guys and gals look at school! And crinolines galore!

Some girls behind the scenes of the Corny Collins show.

All glammed up for the Miss Teenage Hairspray competition.

A look based on Tracy's glam look from the end of the show.

Here's my 60's inspired hair do.
My hair's not great for getting height, though it was, in fact, higher than it looks in this picture.

The back looked kind of messy with all of the bobby pins so I hid it with my Belle Blossom magnolia.

French twist in the back!

All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go

So Thursday I finally got around to trying out the Night Out make up look. It was fun. I opted to use green instead of blue since I don't really like blue on myself. The look turned out ok for my first go. I think next time I'd try purple instead. And the girl in the video had really pigmented colors that showed up really well. My make up was more sheer, but I'll definitely try this look again.

Here's what my eyes look like.

Again, I think a more pigmented color would look better. The green was a little disconcerting too. I felt a bit like a lizard.

I went with a sexy secretary type look. Wish I'd had time to do a Mad Men style hair do!

Skirt: thrifted
Sweater: Ann Taylor Loft
Shirt: Charlotte Russe
Shoes: DSW
Necklace: New York and Company

Hope you're all enjoying the weekend!

Sew Along Alert!

Gertie's New Blog for Better Sewing is going to be starting a new sew along in December! I've been oggling at price-y holiday dresses on etsy that are either out of my budget or too tiny or both, but now I can make my own! Check out the details on her blog.

Here's the dress we're going to make! I was originally thinking red with a green sash, but as I am going to be a red head by Christmas (which I hope some of you got out of the hint in my other post! No lip rings for me!), I was thinking maybe green with a red sash??? Guess I'll have to see when I go fabric shopping.

Cute Festive Giveaway + Tutorial

Casey's Elegant Musings is giving away a plaid 50's style bow headband! It is so cute! She also posted a quick tutorial on how to make your own for those who are sewingly inclined. Think this is going on my list! I was planning on making a plaid dress and a matching headband would be just darling.

Youtube of the Week: Night Out

Check out this week's Youtube of the week-a great make-up video for a killer eye look. I was planning on doing this look this morning so I could have pictures for you, but I woke up feeling all sick...... :/ Maybe later this week I'll have better luck.

Don't forget that the old Youtube of the weeks are linked at the bottom of the page.

Baby, it's cold outside!

The unseasonably warm weather has finally left and fall is moving along. There was frost outside this morning and I was a bit depressed at the thought of wearing jeans and hoodies for the next five months just to stay warm. Right now, once the day warms up, it's fine weather for cute clothes, but early in the morning when I walk to school, it's pretty cold! It causes a lot of fashion issues for me. And I usually fold in the name of being warm and comfy.

So, I thought I'd dig into some fall fashion inspiration. I'm also planning on moving up my winter sewing projects so I can have clothes to wear!

I love this outfit! It's fall from the color pallet to the weather appropriateness. I need some vintage pants badly!

A sharp suit with fur accents. I adore the big belt. It's so modern.

A darling coat pattern. I think coats will have to wait till next year when I can sew better.

More suits with fur accents. I know vintage fur is a touchy subject for a lot of vintage lovers, but you can't argue with the fact that it kept these ladies warm and stylish.

A big poofy collar beats a scarf any day in my book.

Here's a bit of modern re-interpretation. I love the purple coat and the gloves. Not too keen on the hair though. I think I'll stick with something sharp and vintage.

I'm also planning another major "fashion" change to combat the winter blues. Here's a hint!
