A Dizzy of Plaid

I had some request for more construction details on my plaid dress so here they are!

I interlined the bodice with a light weight cotton. All of the seams were finished with rayon seam binding so it's all pretty inside!

Before starting construction, each piece of silk was basted to the interlining in the seam allowance and down the center of the darts using silk thread (that yellow stuff) to hold the pieces together during construction. After a seam was sewn, the basting could be removed. Apparently, I missed some.....

The skirt was interlined in cotton flannel. I don't have a lot of experience picking interlinings for stuff but I used "The Dressmaker's Handbook of Couture Sewing Techniques" to help. The interlining affects the drape so I picked the type of interlining that draped the way I wanted my dress to. There were lots of pictures to help!

I did self covered buttons and bound buttonholes. The bound button holes are not my best job as I tried a new way that I thought would work better on this silk. Note to self: practice new things before trying on actual garments! They're not horrible but not up to par either.

The cuffs and collar I made from some leftover wool suiting.

The construction of the top was super easy. The ties are cut on the bias and hand sewn onto the top of the bodice instead of inserted in a seam in the bodice. One less place to match up plaid!

I did end up spending a lot more time on this dress than I usually do on dresses because of the silk and the plaid but the plaid actually behaved rather well! I think the interlining helped since I only had one slippery side to deal with.

Traditons

One reason we love the holidays is those little traditions that connect the memories over the years. Last year, I made a lovely plaid dress for Thanksgiving. It turned out excellent considering that I'd only been sewing for a couple months but it had some fitting issues. Plus I had this lovely plaid fabric hanging out in my stash so I decided to start my own little tradition of plaid Thanksgiving dresses.

This dress is from Simplicity 3673 which I made before but this is one of the other views. For some reason, the back of this dress is really huge! The first version I made gaped a little but this one is really ridiculous. Guess I'll be ripping out that lovely lapped zipper and putting it back in again. *sigh* I did have great success with the plaid matching on the seams! Woot!

I'm batting two for two here with sewing projects and my husband. He LOVED the black double agent dress and he thought I looked sexy in this one. Could have just been my crazy awesome approaching hooker height black stiletto oxfords scored for only $30 but I'm betting on the rad plaid matching sewing skills. ;)

Fall Style

You all saw this jumper yesterday if you hopped over and checked out my guest post. Needless to say, that wasn't what I wore yesterday. (I actually was feeling sick and had a major frump day. :( ) But I did wear it today with a little bit different outfit.

Fabric: 2 yds wool cotton blend ($6/yd), 1/2 yd lining ($2)
Pattern: Simplicity 3673
Year: retro 50s
Notions: zipper
Time to complete: a while-this piece really came together in piece meal
First worn: October 2011
Wear again? Yes. I really like this jumper. It's really cute and warm!

Total cost: ~$16

I also wanted to show off my new sweater clip! The clips are two leaves with some rhinestones. I also snagged a matching set of dress clips that I ran across on etsy. I love matching things! Even though I probably won't wear them together, it's still a nice set.

Jumper: me made
Sweater: New York and Company
Hat: Forever 21
Sweater clip: vintage

Plaid is Rad

I love shopping and sewing! And I've been doing both lately! I picked up a cute pattern for a dress and the cover had one made out of plaid material. I instantly fell in love with the design made by the plaid on the piece and set out to make my own. I finished it yesterday and wore it out for Thanksgiving today!

Dress: Handmade by me
Sweater: New York and Company
Cami: Banana Republic
Shoes: White House Black Market
Tights: ??? probably Walmart

My hubby also took me out shopping last night as an early Christmas present! I got some super good deals.

I got this red sweater for $20 and a white one in the same style. You can't see, but it has super cute rhinestone buttons! And it's super soft and warm. I actually got hot wearing it and that never happens to me!

I also got these *fabulous* oxford style booties for $30 at White House Black Market! AHHHH! Originally $108!!! I've been thinking about getting a pair of oxford style heals so these were just perfect. They make me super tall and I can actually walk in them as long as I'm on a firm surface (ie not in the grass).

Here is my dress sans sweater. Isn't the way the plaid lies just divine? It's far from perfect but I was very happy with it.

I felt quite stylish today. Did you dress up for the holiday? Or do you prefer comfy, more practical clothes for turkey day?
