1940s Hide a Bang Hairstyle

My new middy haircut is great except that my bangs are not long enough! Here's how I cheat with my bangs to get that classic 1940s look.

A Signature Look

Today I've been pondering the idea of a signature look. I don't have one and I don't know if I need/want one. There are many bloggers who have signature looks-something about them that is instantly noticeable and recognizable. Lisa Freemont Street has her red hair. Super Kawaii Mamma has the iconic white stripe in her hair. Vixen Vintage has a cute curly hair do that she wears very often. Q's Daydream and Rhinestones and Telephones have their adorable bobs.

I problem is that I have style ADD, hair ADD, sewing ADD. I like too many things! While I don't think I'll ever stabilize my fashion enough to settle on a decade, I have lately been thinking about finding a signature look for my hair. I want something I can do with my hair on a day to day basis that looks nice and is super easy to do. And I really hate when my hair just hangs there on my head. I have a naturally high forehead and I feel that my flat, straight hair makes it look even bigger and more rectangular shaped. I do like bangs but not enough to commit long term to them (I think.... actually, the bang issue really set off this whole thought process. *sigh* to fringe or not to fringe?)

So, what I want to know is do you have a signature look (hair, wardrobe or makeup related)? Have you in the past? Do you want one? Do you enjoy more freedom (or get bored like me)?

A survey of vintage bangs

Bangs have always for the bold and fashion forward. They make a definite statement that takes some serious commitment. They can take forever to grow out, you know! Bangs can also very strongly show a particular period. So here's a survey of bang styles over the years.

Bangs in the 1920's were a bold way to set yourself firmly in the flapper style. Several film stars adopted a severe bob with blunt straight bangs but wispier bangs were not unheard of either.

Bangs in the 1930's moved away from the blunt style and tended towards the wispy look. They were also often curly.

While the U-shaped Bettie Paige bangs first became popular in the 1940s, curly bangs were also popular. These bangs were fuller than looks from the 1930s. Most often, however, the bang area was a rather long fringe that was styled into the rest of the hair to give a peak-a-boo wave. The Middy haircut had this type of bang.

Bettie Paige bangs continued to be popular in the 1950s. Rolled bangs were an option for those who didn't want bangs every day. Softer bangs a la Audrey Hepburn also began to appear.

Happy Hair!

I did a pincurl set last night and it turned out great! Yay for good hair days! It was chilly so my outfit was not too cute. So I didn't take any pictures of it. Lovely spring weather please come back!

Curly, curly, curly!

I wore one of my favorite Belle Blossoms! I love the color on me!

Bettie Bang Round up

I cut my Bettie Bangs back in Thursday evening. I missed them a lot and they look so much cuter with my longer hair. I pulled together a youtube video highlighting some great youtube tutorials on Bettie Bangs. There are cutting tutorials, faux Bettie bang tutorials and a great tutorial on styling Bettie Bangs when you don't want to see them.

Enjoy!

Faux Betty Bangs

So, in keeping with my New Year's resolution #3, here is the hairstyle from last week's Youtube of the Week.

Pardon my weird face. My eyes looked goofy in all of the pictures. I hate taking pictures of myself.

Here's the bangs by themselves. Looks pretty cute. I wore this style out shopping and it held up pretty well.... that is until I started trying on clothes. It's not really designed to hold up to shirts going on and off all day. But, other than that, it lasted quite long.

Ashley of Lisa Freemont Street used a hair flower to cover her bobby pins and I choose to do the same. I think that with more practice, I could figure out how to hide the pins underneath the rest of my hair, but I didn't have time to fool with it. I'll definitely be doing this style again. It was super easy and made me feel like I had my Betty bangs again! The hair flower I'm wearing is another Belle Blossom.

Vacation has been going great! I'm in Palm Coast FL, which is located between St. Augustine and Daytona Beach. The weather is quite fabulous and the hubby and I are quite taken with the area. The resort has no wifi, so this is likely to be my last post until I return home.

To Fringe or Not to Fringe Part 2

My hubby did a photo shoot today and snapped a couple of me along the way. Check out my bangs!

Don't I look so much cuter when I'm not photographing myself?

It was such a lovely day out.

I love the wimsy of the cute bow head band with the bolero jacket! While not exactly vintage, this outfit does go well with vintage make-up and bangs. And I've been inspired by everybody else doing cute outfit posts!

To Fringe or Not to Fringe

While dithering about whether or not to grow out my hair, I have left my bangs alone. They started out as a short betty page length and have now progressed to past my eyebrows and are quite unmanageable. I could grow them out with everything else or chop them again. I'm so torn between all of the adorable hairstyles with and without bangs!

Vintage Fringe

A cute curly fringe.

A smoother bang.

Pin-curl diagram for bangs!

More bangs.

Betty Page style fringe.

With my bangs, I have been able to get both the smooth, Betty Page style and curly style using a curling iron and pin curls, respectively.

Vintage No Fringe

A soft vintage look.

A more spunky, curly look.

The faux bang made by rolling the hair or with a rat (which I have NOT mastered.).

Modern Vintage-y Bangs

Zooey Deschanel with her cute, eclectic, vintage-y wardrobe.

Another Zooey-I couldn't resist!

Kenley Collins showing a definite vintage vibe.

I love the eclectic, vintage-y look, especially for a beginner like me with a modest vintage wardrobe and a job that does not jive with true vintage attire. (I cringe at the thought of dripping chemicals on a 60+ year old garment! No vintage in the lab!)

As I continue to ponder this, I'll probably end up with a post of my bangs styled in a couple different ways.

So, what do people think? Fringe or no fringe?
