Costume College: Thoughts and Plans

Costume College is just a few months away! Aaaah! With the Historical Sew Fortnightly going on, I have made some good progress as far as having something done (especially since I want to wear much more historical and much less vintage this year). Last year, I just went with the theme of use whatever I already have and make everything else super cheap. See last year's gala dress where the only bits I paid for were the zip and pattern (which I got for under $20).

Since I've been there and done that, I feel like I'm much better prepared to plan out more exciting outfits! Plus I've been budgeting costumes into my regular sewing spending money all year.

Thursday:
  • Travel: ??? probably something vintage
  • Pool Party: fabric-check pattern-picked out but not purchased, will be vintage

Friday:
  • Classes: done, will be vintage
  • Ice Cream Social- currently a WIP, mostly done but waiting for the HSF challenge to come up, will be historical
Saturday:
  • Classes: secret project, fabric- check, pattern-check, just need to get started
  • Gala: WIP, will hopefully make loads of progress on it this weekend! will be historical

Sunday:
  • Classes: done, will be historical
Monday:
  • Garment district shopping: ??? probably something vintage
Tuesday:
  • Travel: ??? probably something vintage
Gala 27 (me)

So, that leaves me with 4 projects that I really want to get done and three outfits that I'll probably just fill in with something already in my closet. Plus I still never made a chemise for my Edwardian undergarments. :/ And I may need a petticoat for my gala dress.

Now that I'm working on my Gala dress, I want to know what parts you'd like to see. I'm going to reveal it before Costume College because I'm using it for a HSF challenge and I want to keep certain details secret until the reveal but I'd like your input on what else about it you'd like to see.

Poll time!! You may pick more than one answer and feel free to elaborate in the comments!

Winter/Spring Sewing Plans

After a rather hectic weekend and my husband and I's first bridal expo (He's trying to start up doing wedding photography so cross your fingers that we'll be super busy this summer!), I just feel like I need a bit of refocusing to get me going. I also have a proposal due soon so I can get funding to do research this summer so time management is super important right now. And seeing as you'd much rather hear about me planning out my sewing projects than my research proposal, here's what I'm planning on making over the next few months.

1. Eva Dress 30s Skirt

I'm making this skirt from that yummy herringbone I got in the fabric destash. I've actually started on a muslin for this so hopefully it'll be done soon.

2. Past Patterns Edwardian Skirt

I so need a black skirt to go with my Dressing Downton tops.

3. Sybil's (and Edith's) blouse

I've already started drafting this top but I've run out of tracing paper and haven't made it out to get anymore yet.

 4. Sybil's Flower show dress

You guys just heard about this one but I'm planning on wearing this for Easter.

5. Mary's blouse

I have fabric for this but haven't gotten around to buying a pattern to use as a base but I want to get it done this spring.

6. 40s pinstripe dress

I'm also itching to make this pink dress! I have an adorable drapey twill with pink and grey pinstripes stashed away for this dress and it will get made this spring!

What are your sewing plans for the up coming spring (or fall for those of you down under) season? Or are you still in full winter (summer) mode? Winter here has been so mild that I'm just so in spring mode!

FESA and FPC Sewing Plan

So, I have had a general idea of what I wanted to sew and knit for fall but with both the FESA and FPC in full swing, it's probably past time for me to actually peg down my plans.

1. Sailor Playsuit Pants

I've already completed one pair of these lovelies drafted from Wearing History's 1940s Sailor Girl Playsuit shorts and am planning another in the leftover monk fabric.

Colors: #1 grey #2 brown

2. Librarian Circle Skirt

I'm planning a librarian themed circle skirt for Casey's Circle Skirt Sew Along.

Colors: brown

3. Candice Sweater

This will be my first sweater! :)

Colors: Purple (though quite a bit darker than the one in my palette)

4. 1950s style Jumper a la Audrey Hepburn

Inspired by this photo:

I've tracked down some suitable fabric and a 1950s retro pattern to create this little lovely.

Colors: grey

5. Fingerless gloves and Neck warmer

I've already finished knitting one of the cabled fingerless gloves! Should be great for those chilly walks to school

Colors: sea green

6. 1940s skirt suit

I'm whipping up the skirt and jacket from this pattern:

in the same microhoundstooth as my completed pants.

Colors: grey

Bonus projects:

These are only if I have time projects.

7. Mary's blouse

I'm planning on reproducing the blouse Lady Mary is wearing in this photo:

using this pattern:

Colors: ivory and mauve

8. Suit blouse

The suit pattern above comes with a blouse pattern that I may try.

Colors: sea green or purple or mauve

9. Hats

If I'm really inspired, I'll take another crack at millinery.
