More on the vintage silhouette

Judging by your comments on my bra post last week, getting a good silhouette is important to many of you! So let's discuss the basics of proper 50s under pinnings!

  1. can't wait to watch this once I get off of work! I've been recently amassing some vintage underpinnings.

  2. Something you might want as well is a girdle panty. Rhonda Shear has a great style of what she calls the "pinup line" of bras and panties. I have worn the panties and already planning a review for them!

  3. Great tips! Thank you. You don't realize how much undergarnments matter until you get the right ones. I do notice that with a corset they tend to be bulky with the boneing. (Hope I'm spelling that right). I really need a good crinoline, especially a white one. Awesome that you made your own! I'm not quite sure I'd want to tackle one:) It's also interesting about the length of crinoline. It's like you need four or five of them but gosh, they take up so much space! I also have a "hoop" crinoline that is vintage but it seems to be more bumpy and not fluid. Do you ever use a "hoop" type of crinoline with your 50's wear? Wow, you can totally see a big difference between modern and vintage undergarnments! I love seeing a before and after:) I'm still looking for a favorite vintage style bra. I find the modern ones are way too padded.

    1. I've never used a hoop type crinoline with 50s wear, but I have used them for historical costuming. I imagine it would be hard to get the hoops to keep from showing through your dress. It's definitely much easier to move in a crinoline that is collapsible. I only have two so they fit in my closet but I've seen other ladies hang them on the back of their closet door.

  4. This is a great video, everything is very clearly explained and I feel like I know what I need to look for now. I liked the before and after, it made the difference very obvious. I have a couple of modern bras by Fantasie which are underwired but have a centre cup seam and some good side seams which seam to produce a more vintage than modern silhouette for the bust.

  5. That was really interesting! This is definitely one of those details that makes a huge amount of difference but is a bit intimidating when you don't know what you're doing. It's so easy to find vintage-style clothes but completing the whole look is harder. Thanks for the advice.

I loved the idea of making a petticoat from a charity-shop prom dress, I will have to keep an eye out. I've found charity shops a great source for slips, especially in small country towns (but that is in Australia, I don't know if it's the same for you). Also I never knew that the stockings help keep the waist cincher down, I always thought of it as just the other way around! Awesome.

  6. Wonderful video and look at some of the most crucial undergarments for the vintage loving lady's wardrobe. I have been wearing such pieces for years now and honestly feel underdressed underneath (so to speak) on those rare days I wear all modern undergarments. I much, much prefer the lines that vintage/vintage style ones deliver. I find they compliment my natural hourglass shape so much better.

*PS* Love your handmade tulle crinoline. You are so talented, dear gal!

  7. My Wi Fi is just too awful here to get through this properly! It looks good so far, I've bookmarked it to come back to when I have decent wi fi!
