Sticking with What Works

I'm all for trying new things but sometimes you have to just stick with what works. So when a nice piece of vintage fabric came my way, I knew I wanted to stick with a tried and true pattern so there was not chance of sewing failure.

I used Simplicity 2851 c. 1949. This is the 4th time I've made up this pattern! (1) (2) (3)

I love the kimono sleeves, cute collar and flattering shape!

If you have a really great pattern, you can make it up several times without it looking too much like the same dress. Different materials, the use of print vs. solids and adding optional details really changes up the look.

Of course, chopping off your hair also helps to diversify the look! lol!

I really do adore this new dress! It's perfect for work and oh, so comfortable!

What's your favorite tried and true sewing pattern?

  1. Ha! I have a few patterns like that.... if it works, why change it! Anyway, you look fabulous and I love that print, so snazzy.

  2. Love that you have a favorite pattern. You are right each one looks different than the rest and best thing about it is that it gets quicker to sew. A beautiful silhouette on you. Also, lovely fabric choice.

  3. That's a fantastic dress and that color looks great on you!

The skirt from Simplicity 3773 (1950's) is definitely my favorite go-to pattern. I love how easy it is to make minor changes, as you mentioned, to get a slightly different look, while knowing that it will still turn out just right.

  4. Wow, I've gotta get me this pattern! It definitely looks different each time you've made it, I have yet to find a basic go-to dress like that. This one looks amazing on you!

  5. Your dress is lovely, I especially like the colors :)
I am still in the process of finding patterns that work, and currently making different ones every time. It must be great to *know* which pattern to use, and get the perfect dress right off the bat!

  6. Definitely! I'm all for shaking things up, too, but knowing that there are certain styles, patterns, and colours that you can reach for time and time again and look great in is worth its weight in gold. Plus, developing something of a signature look is a fabulous way to ensure people really remember your style (think Grace, Jackie and Audrey and their telltale styles, for example).

  7. I can't say that I have a tried and true pattern yet; at least not one that I've made time and time again as you have! I have one vintage shirtdress pattern from the sixties that I made and was stunned to find that no alterations were needed and it fits me perfectly. I have toyed with the idea of making it again but so far, have not.
